RED Camera in Post-Production


Digital的介入, 令Optical變成不是電影中的唯一。RED的質素可以與菲林媲美。學校的exercise除了能接觸HD(我B1時學校仍處於SD階段), 還有16mm & 35mm。

今天初次接觸RED, 重新出發...... RED的後期workflow雖說與菲林大同小異, 但1st time接觸應該會出現無數問題 & 錯誤吧, 所以, 仍要小心!!! 晚上回來後找到了一些資料, 記下來, 真的需要整理一下...


Red File Format:
1) root folder: RDC
2) red file (4K file): R3D
3) Proxy: Quicktime File (F, H, M, P --> represent Quality)


Resolution of Red:
4.5K WideScreen : 4480x1920
4K 16:9 : 4096x2304
4K HD : 3840x2160
4K 2:1 : 4096x248



** Set up in Red Camera**
Project-rate & Frame-rate are different! Need to check carefully!!!
Project-rate affects the Timecode, affects the EDL!!! very important!!!


Post-Production File Format:
R3D can convert into different file format, depends on the quality, the output master & the editing software used.

1) ProRes (mov)
2) DNxHD (mxf)
3) uncompressed (這個我也不知是什麼file...)
4) DPX --> uncompressed 的 (image Seq)
5) TIFF --> uncompressed 的 (image Seq)



ProRes(mov) is used by FCP, DNxHD(mxf) is used by AVID

the codec inside "ProRes(mov)":
1) 8bit = ProRes, LT, Proxy
2)10bit = ProRes HQ 422
3)10bit RGB = ProRes 4444

the codec inside "DNxHD(mxf)":
1) 8bit = DNxHD 36, 115, 175
2)10bit = DNxHD 175

DPX --> 10bit
Tiff --> 10bit, 16bit




The Colour Space for working in Post-Prod:
Dailies & Editing: RedSpace / RedColour
Visual Effect: RedGammar




The Workflow of RED in Post-Prod (offline & online):
1) Back up at least 2 copies from the original footage
--> into different hard drives
2) Start working with computer (decide which software to use first) [offline start!]


3) Transcode (down-convert) [file format & codec depend on FCP / Avid]
Use "Red Rocket" (hardware) / "Red Rushes" (software)
Import into FCP / AVID
Sync Sound
Subclip & Filing
4) offline editing in FCP / AVID


5) Export EDL for colour grading

6) Get the raw file (R3D or DPX) for colour grading


7) CG (if we have) [online start!]
8) online stuff: subtitle, title, credit, effect(dissolve/fade), CG
9) sync with sound after SOUND MIXING


10) Render: Linear DPX


11) Output Master


這只是大約的workflow, 所有workflow 也基於 output甚麼而定。故若我們要最後印在print上的話, 最後幾步也會不同了, 要再研究一下。

有點複雜的後期, 要慢慢再看清楚。



還有一點,
RED can support both Single or Double System with "SOUND",
can Generate Timecode (in / out???), easier for sync-sound.
But need to use with the electronic slate.
